Mercedes Defends Decision to Reject FIA Driver Cooling Aid Amidst Heat Challenges
Mercedes team management has defended their decision to opt out of a FIA program designed to develop liquid-cooled driver vests, which could have helped alleviate the extreme heat experienced during recent Southeast Asian races.
The FIA had introduced a financial allowance for teams to create these cooling systems, but Mercedes chose not to participate, prioritizing car performance over driver comfort. Deputy team principal Bradley Lord stated that the cost cap limitations made it difficult to develop a reliable solution that would last throughout a race.
Despite the discomfort, Lord noted that both drivers supported the decision, emphasizing that performance is often prioritized over comfort in racing. However, the decision backfired when Russell had to retire from the race due to a power unit failure, raising concerns about potential engine penalties in future races.
