Mercedes Defends Team Orders at Dutch GP for Podium Finish

Mercedes has affirmed its decision to allow Kimi Antonelli to overtake George Russell during the Dutch Grand Prix, believing it was essential for securing a double podium finish.

During the race at Zandvoort, a virtual safety car was triggered on lap 55, positioning Antonelli in second and Russell in fourth. After both Ferraris pitted, Russell moved into second, but was instructed to let Antonelli pass, which he did despite initial hesitation. Antonelli finished second while Russell defended his third place against the Ferraris.

Following a debrief, Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord stated that the decision was made to maximize their chances of finishing in the top positions. The team had previously agreed on strategies to avoid time loss between their drivers. Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin praised Russell's performance in defending his position, which helped the team secure valuable points in the championship.
