Mercedes Drivers Face Challenges After Divided Qualifying in Singapore
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team encountered a unique situation during the 2026 Formula 1 season's Sprint qualifying at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The team opted to split their aerodynamic packages to assess a problematic upgrade, leading to starkly different results for their drivers.
George Russell, utilizing the older vehicle specification, secured a front-row position, finishing just 0.120 seconds behind polesitter Max Verstappen. In contrast, championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli, in the upgraded car, faced significant challenges and qualified in seventh place. Despite an impending engine penalty that will push him to the back of the grid for the main race, Russell expressed optimism for the Sprint race, noting his comfort with the older setup.
Antonelli, who maintains an 84-point lead in the Drivers' Championship, struggled to find his rhythm throughout the day. With strict parc fermé regulations limiting adjustments, he and his engineering team are focusing on analyzing data to improve the car's performance ahead of the Sprint.
