Mercedes Explains Rejection of Macarena Wing Concept
Mercedes Formula 1 team deputy technical director Simone Resta has revealed that the team considered a rotating rear wing concept, known as the Macarena wing, more than a year ago. Despite evaluating its potential benefits, the team decided against pursuing the design.
The Macarena wing, which features a flap that rotates when the car shifts to straight-line mode, has been adopted by rivals such as Ferrari and Red Bull. However, Mercedes has not shown interest in this innovation. Resta explained that while the wing could reduce drag, it also compromises downforce, leading to the conclusion that it was not the best overall option for the team.
Currently, Mercedes leads the constructors' championship with 578 points, significantly ahead of Ferrari. The team is preparing to introduce new upgrades for both cars at the upcoming United States Grand Prix, following a previous split in component testing between drivers.
