Mercedes' Strategy Decision in Italian GP Explained by Toto Wolff

Toto Wolff provided insights into Mercedes' strategy during the Italian Grand Prix, where Kimi Antonelli secured a remarkable victory after starting from the back of the grid. The team opted to split strategies between its drivers, with Antonelli switching to medium tires after an early red flag, while George Russell remained on hard tires following a pit stop after Charles Leclerc's crash.

During the race, Antonelli was able to challenge Russell for the lead, but Mercedes instructed him not to attack initially to create a gap from Max Verstappen. The decision to pit Antonelli came during a virtual safety car period on lap 27, allowing him to return to the track on fresher tires, ultimately enabling him to overtake Russell.

Wolff noted that the team was uncertain which strategy would yield better results, as their software indicated that Russell's one-stop strategy was favorable. Despite Antonelli's report of good tire condition, the decision to pit was made based on observed tire wear from other cars. Russell expressed that he felt confident in his strategy and believed he could have won had Antonelli not pitted, as he was managing his energy effectively.
