Merseyrail Defends E-Bike Ban Citing Safety Risks
The managing director of Merseyrail has defended the network's decision to prohibit non-folding e-bikes on trains and at stations, emphasizing the need for safety measures. This ban, which will be enforced starting in January, was introduced over concerns regarding the potential for battery fires.
According to Suzanne Grant, the underground nature of the network poses significant risks, particularly during emergencies where self-evacuations could lead to dangerous situations. The ban has sparked controversy, with local cycling groups and political figures questioning the evidence behind the decision. Despite this, Grant stated that the ban was essential to ensure the safety of both staff and passengers.
Protests have occurred in response to the ban, with cyclists demonstrating outside Merseytravel's headquarters. Grant noted that the company had collaborated with Transport for London and the Merseyside Fire and Rescue service to assess risks, concluding that the ban was the safest option. Additionally, storing e-bikes at stations will also be prohibited.
