Merseyside Police Implement New Anti-Shoplifting Tactics

Merseyside Police have adopted new tactics this year to enhance their response to shoplifting incidents. When there is substantial evidence against a suspect, officers can now utilize a fast-track digital evidence-gathering protocol, allowing them to focus on more cases.

According to Ch Insp Chris Ruane, the results of Operation Dale have been transformative, with the force solving approximately 46% of reported shoplifting offences, a significant increase from the previous rate of about 23% six months ago. The number of reported shoplifting incidents in the area rose by around 10% in the last financial year.

Ruane attributed the rise in shoplifting to various factors, including the cost of living crisis and challenges within the prison system. He noted that some individuals view shoplifting as a viable option for income. The police are now tracking around six reported offences daily and are committed to investigating every incident with viable leads, such as CCTV footage or witness accounts.
