Merseyside Police Warns of Phone Number Spoofing Scam
Merseyside Police has issued a warning about fraudsters who are spoofing police phone numbers to deceive individuals into transferring money. Detectives reported that one victim fell for the scam and transferred a significant amount.
The scammers posed as detectives investigating identity theft, seeking personal bank details and information about cryptocurrency. Det Sgt John Causton emphasized that impersonating a police officer is a criminal offense that endangers the community.
Causton urged the public to verify the identity of officers by calling the police if they are uncertain. He reminded everyone that legitimate officers will never ask for PIN numbers or card details through any means.
