Merseyside Sees Surge in Shoplifting Incidents Post-Pandemic

Shoplifting incidents in Merseyside have significantly increased since the end of the coronavirus pandemic, rising from 5,415 in 2020-21 to 10,419 in 2025-26, according to Merseyside Police data.

Gary Wakefield, owner of Lili Bizarre fancy dress shop in Liverpool, has reported a surge in thefts and is now employing extra security guards ahead of Halloween. He expressed frustration over the police's lack of action on reported incidents, noting that even when evidence is provided, little is done to address the crimes.

Wakefield recounted a troubling incident involving a father and son who shoplifted, highlighting a perceived lack of deterrents for thieves. He criticized the police for their minimal presence in busy areas and emphasized that many shoplifting cases go unreported, with estimates suggesting that only about 10% are documented. The Liverpool Business Improvement District has echoed these concerns, indicating that the true scale of shoplifting may be much larger.
