Mets Acquire Infielder Christian Cairo from Phillies

The New York Mets have claimed infielder Christian Cairo off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies, as announced by the Phillies on Tuesday. Cairo was designated for assignment over the weekend, and the Mets have an open spot on their 40-man roster following the assignment of reliever Chris Devenski.

Cairo, 25, was originally drafted by Cleveland in 2019 and signed with the Phillies as a minor league free agent this past winter. Although he was added to the 40-man roster at the end of spring training, he has not yet made his major league debut, spending the entire season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

During his time in the minors, Cairo has demonstrated his versatility by playing multiple positions, including second base, shortstop, and outfield. He leads his league in walks but has struggled with a batting average of .227 and limited power, hitting four home runs this season. Cairo has two minor league option years remaining, which could allow the Mets to retain him as a depth option as they aim for a stronger performance next season.
