Mets Acquire Shawn Ross from Pirates, Designate Joey Gerber

The New York Mets have announced the acquisition of catcher Shawn Ross, who was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. To accommodate this move on the 40-man roster, the Mets designated right-hander Joey Gerber for assignment.

Joey Gerber has made seven appearances for the Mets this season, posting a 4.32 ERA over 8 1/3 innings. He was recently sent to the minors and placed on the Triple-A injured list. Shawn Ross, 26, is transitioning to a new team for the first time in his career after being designated for assignment by the Pirates. While primarily a catcher, he has also played various infield and outfield positions. Ross has shown potential power but has struggled with strikeouts throughout his minor league career. He made his MLB debut on July 25, hitting his first home run in two games.
