Mets Designate Gabriel Arias for Assignment
The New York Mets announced on Monday that infielder Gabriel Arias has been designated for assignment. This move allows Christopher Morel, another right-handed infielder, to take his place on the 40-man roster after being called up from Triple-A Syracuse.
Arias had a short tenure with the Mets, having been acquired off waivers from the Guardians, where he was previously designated for assignment. During his time with the Mets, he played in two games and had five hitless plate appearances.
Originally a highly regarded prospect, Arias has struggled offensively in the major leagues, posting a career batting line of .218/.274/.358 over 1,173 plate appearances. He has a high strikeout rate and has not been able to produce significant offensive contributions. With no minor league options remaining, if he joins another team, he will need to be placed on their 40-man roster. Arias has three years of arbitration eligibility remaining, but his performance may lead to him being a non-tender candidate unless he shows improvement.
