Miami President Discusses Potential Conference Realignment
Miami president Joe Echevarria has openly discussed the university's aspirations to join either the SEC or Big Ten, emphasizing that this desire is not due to dissatisfaction with the ACC but rather the evolving landscape of college football.
As the Protect College Sports Act is considered in the House of Representatives, Echevarria highlighted the need for changes to prevent further conference expansion and facilitate member teams' departures. He pointed out that despite Miami's successful performance and revenue generation, they are still perceived as being in the 'second tier' of college football.
Echevarria noted that Miami aligns well with the academic profile of the Big Ten while also fitting geographically with the SEC. He acknowledged the potential challenges of remaining independent if conference realignment does not occur, indicating that while Miami is a national brand, scheduling for other sports would be complicated.
