Michael King Becomes Free Agent After Declining Player Option
Right-handed pitcher Michael King has opted out of his 2027 player option, becoming a free agent, as reported by Jon Heyman of The New York Post. King, who played for the San Diego Padres, has a five-day window to negotiate with his former team before he can sign with any club starting November 2.
King had a successful 2026 season, pitching 185 innings across 32 starts with a 3.21 earned run average. He also excelled in the postseason, recording a 0.64 ERA in three appearances. His decision to decline the option and take a $5 million buyout leaves $53 million on the table, as he aims for a more lucrative contract in the upcoming free agency.
The Padres are facing potential losses in their pitching rotation, with several players, including Walker Buehler and Robbie Ray, also entering free agency. While King has expressed a desire to return to San Diego, the team will need to evaluate their options as they look to strengthen their starting lineup for the next season.
