Michael Penix Jr. Discusses QB Competition with Tua Tagovailoa
The Atlanta Falcons are currently evaluating their starting quarterback position, with Tua Tagovailoa and 2024 draft pick Michael Penix Jr. as the main contenders. However, Penix has not yet been fully medically cleared following surgery for a partially torn ACL last fall.
Penix acknowledged that his immediate focus is on recovery rather than competing for the starting role. He emphasized the importance of being healthy enough to play before considering the depth chart. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa has been participating as the primary quarterback during spring workouts and is expected to play in the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos.
Penix mentioned that he is making progress in his rehabilitation and is optimistic about his recovery timeline, although he may not be fully cleared until later in August. Reports suggest that Tagovailoa is likely to be the starter for the Falcons' season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers unless significant changes occur.
