Mike Dean Addresses Controversy Over Refereeing Comments

Mike Dean, a former Premier League referee, has responded to criticism regarding his comments about playing mini-games during matches. After stepping down from officiating in 2022, Dean stated that he did not aim to undermine the integrity of refereeing.

In a podcast, Dean mentioned that he would sometimes try to avoid blowing his whistle for as long as possible. He claimed to have gone 20 to 25 minutes without stopping play in some matches. However, former referee Mark Halsey criticized these claims, suggesting it would be impossible to refrain from using the whistle for such extended periods.

BBC Sport analyzed Dean's officiating records from 2008-09 to 2018-19, focusing on 214 matches that were scoreless after 15 minutes. The findings revealed that only four matches had extended periods without a whistle, with the longest being 18 minutes and 20 seconds. While Dean's approach to allowing the game to flow was noted, the evidence did not fully support his claims of extended play without interruptions.
