Mike Dean Reveals In-Match Challenges During Refereeing Career

Mike Dean, a former Premier League referee, disclosed that he engaged in playful challenges during matches, such as timing how long he could refrain from blowing his whistle. He mentioned these activities while appearing on Jamie Vardy's podcast.

Dean recounted instances where he managed to go 20 to 25 minutes without using his whistle and once stayed in the center circle for about 15 minutes as part of his lighthearted approach to officiating.

However, BBC Sport reports that Dean's claims are viewed skeptically by referee figures, who suggest that such practices would be historically unfounded, particularly before the introduction of VAR in 2019. Dean's career spanned 28 years, during which he officiated over 550 Premier League matches and was involved in notable events like the 2008 FA Cup final.
