Mike McCarthy Optimistic About Joey Porter's Week 1 Participation

Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy has expressed optimism regarding cornerback Joey Porter's participation in the upcoming season opener against the Falcons. The team is under pressure to finalize a long-term contract with Porter, as they do not negotiate extensions once the season begins.

McCarthy indicated that there are ongoing discussions about Porter's contract, stating that he hopes the player will be ready to compete. Porter recently returned to practice after being on the active/physically unable to perform list throughout training camp. However, he has not confirmed his availability for Week 1 without a contract extension.

Porter, who was selected in the second round of the 2023 draft, is in the final year of his rookie contract, which is worth $3.924 million. Last season, he achieved a career-high with 14 passes defensed, alongside 52 tackles, one sack, and one interception.
