Mike Norvell Criticizes Controversial Holding Call in FSU's Overtime Loss to Miami
Florida State's football team faced disappointment in Week 7 due to a controversial holding call during their double overtime game against No. 3 Miami. The call nullified a potential touchdown pass from Ashton Daniels to Micahi Danzy on a critical third-and-21 play.
Coach Mike Norvell, reflecting on the incident after reviewing game footage, criticized the decision as unjust. He noted that the holding call against Xavier Chaplin involved a technique commonly taught to offensive linemen, which he believes was executed correctly. This technique, known as the snatch-and-trap, has been a point of contention in officiating, particularly in high-stakes situations.
Norvell also raised concerns about another officiating decision regarding a fourth-and-31 play that was ruled an interception, which he felt should have been reviewed for simultaneous possession. He expressed disappointment that the holding call deprived his team of the opportunity to compete for a win in triple overtime.
