Mikey Lewis Excluded from England's Rugby World Cup Opener Against Tonga
Mikey Lewis has been omitted from England's squad for their opening match in the Rugby League World Cup against Tonga, scheduled for Saturday in Perth. Harry Smith will join captain George Williams in the half-back positions.
Lewis, who was selected over Jake Connor for the squad, will not even be on the bench for the match. He is among three players, including Ben Currie and Ben Talty, designated as non-playing reserves. England's match against Tonga will kick off at 10:05 BST.
Head coach Brian McDermott has also made significant selections, including AJ Brimson as full-back, ahead of Jack Welsby. Brimson is one of four heritage players in the squad, which includes debutants Max King and Hugo Savala. The tournament features a combined pool of six teams, with the top two advancing to the semi-finals.
