MLB Proposes Changes to Off-Season Calendar

Major League Baseball has put forward a proposal to modify the off-season calendar, aiming to restrict free-agent signings to specific weeks in December and early February, along with a trade ban during the interim period. This initiative is intended to create a more dynamic off-season similar to those seen in the NFL and NBA.

The proposal, presented to the players' association, is dependent on the acceptance of a salary cap system that MLB suggested earlier. This has been met with strong opposition from the players' union, which argues that such a cap would undermine player rights and leverage.

Under the current regulations, players can enter free agency immediately after the World Series, but negotiations cannot begin until a designated quiet period ends. MLB's new plan would extend this quiet period and impose restrictions on trades during certain times. Additionally, the proposal includes various changes to roster management and player options, which have also drawn criticism from union representatives.
