MLB Teams Form Partnerships with Prediction Markets Amid Regulatory Scrutiny
In a recent development, seven Major League Baseball teams have established partnerships with prediction markets, highlighting a growing trend in the industry. Kalshi announced agreements with five teams: the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants, joining earlier deals made by the New York Mets and New York Yankees.
This surge in partnerships coincides with congressional calls for stricter regulations on gambling promotions in sports, as well as a lawsuit from New York state against Kalshi, claiming its offerings constitute gambling. The MLB Players Association has also proposed measures to limit certain betting types in response to these concerns.
These partnerships are seen as a way for prediction markets to gain legitimacy and access to a younger demographic of sports fans. The financial implications of these deals can be significant, potentially reaching eight figures annually. As the landscape evolves, more teams may seek similar arrangements, although the saturation of such partnerships across all 30 teams remains uncertain.
