MLB Trials Outfield Positioning Rules in Minors to Boost Offense
In Scottsdale, Arizona, Major League Baseball is experimenting with new outfield positioning rules during the Arizona Fall League to address the game's declining offense. Minnesota Twins prospect Kyle DeBarge recently participated in this trial, where a video board indicates whether outfielders are correctly positioned.
The initiative aims to encourage more doubles and triples by requiring outfielders to maintain a standard position rather than adjusting based on hitters' tendencies. Infielders also face new restrictions when no runners are on base, limiting their ability to shift.
This experiment is confined to games at Salt River Fields, which is equipped with the necessary technology. MLB has previously used the Arizona Fall League to test rule changes, including the Automated Ball-Strike system. While the league has seen success with other rule adjustments, such as the pitch clock, offensive statistics have remained largely unchanged, prompting this latest trial.
