Mohun Bagan Super Giant triumphed over Jamshedpur FC in a penalty shootout, winning 9-8 after a 1-1 draw in regulation time during the quarterfinals of the 135th Durand Cup at Salt Lake Stadium on Monday.
Sahal Abdul Samad scored early for Bagan in the second minute, but Jamshedpur equalized just before halftime through Devendra Murgaonkar. With no extra time allowed under tournament rules, the match proceeded directly to penalties.
Both teams successfully converted their initial five penalty attempts, leading to sudden death. After 16 successful kicks, Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith saved a shot from Jamshedpur’s Lawmsangzuala, allowing Tekcham Abhishek Singh to score the winning penalty for Bagan. Despite the loss, Jamshedpur, which is in the process of dissolving, displayed commendable effort with an all-Indian squad.
