Montana's Sand Creek Fire Damages Maverick Mountain Ski Area
The Sand Creek Fire has reached the Maverick Mountain ski area in Montana, resulting in damage to structures within the area. The fire, which has been active since August 1, has expanded significantly, fueled by warm weather and winds.
Maverick Mountain, located approximately 40 miles from Dillon, Montana, is a small ski operation with 210 skiable acres and a single lift. The owner, Erik Borge, reported that the situation escalated when the sheriff informed him of the approaching fire. A social media update confirmed that the fire is now within the ski area boundary, with damage reported to the Maverick chairlift.
The Sand Creek Fire is currently the largest active wildfire in Montana, having grown over 19,000 acres recently, and remains at zero percent containment. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
