Montreal Canadiens Sign Alex Newhook to Four-Year Extension

The Montreal Canadiens have announced the signing of forward Alex Newhook to a four-year contract extension worth $22.2 million, averaging $5.55 million annually. This move comes as part of a busy day for the team.

Newhook, who is 25 years old, began his NHL career with the Colorado Avalanche after being selected 16th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. He became a full-time player for the Avalanche in the 2021-22 season, finishing that year with 13 goals and 33 points in 71 games. However, his performance declined in the following season, where he recorded 14 goals and 30 points in 82 games.

In June 2023, Newhook was traded to the Canadiens, where he has since thrived, scoring 43 goals and 85 points in 179 games. His new contract is expected to strengthen Montreal's long-term salary-cap situation, as they remain one of the few teams without a player earning over $10 million on their current contracts.
