Mother Receives Apology After 53-Year Search for Stillborn Son
Gina Jacobs, a mother from Greasby, Wirral, has received a personal apology from the Health Secretary after a 53-year search for her stillborn son, Robert, who was born in February 1969.
Jacobs learned the location of her son's burial only in 2022, discovering that over 1,000 infants were buried in unmarked graves across Wirral, with additional mass graves in Oldham, Greater Manchester. The government issued an apology to parents whose stillborn children were buried without their knowledge, with Health Secretary Yvette Cooper personally contacting Jacobs to express regret.
Jacobs expressed her gratitude for the apology, stating it provided dignity to her son and other babies buried in similar circumstances. She reflected on the past practices of communal burials for stillborn infants, which were common before the 1980s.
