MotoGP Considers Implementing F1-Style Budget Cap
Carlos Ezpeleta, the sporting director of MotoGP, has expressed the need for a budget cap on team expenditures, drawing inspiration from the financial strategies implemented in Formula 1.
Ezpeleta highlighted that the introduction of a budget cap in F1 has significantly improved profitability and attracted new manufacturers, such as Audi and Cadillac. Currently, MotoGP teams have varying budgets, with Honda spending around €80 million and Aprilia approximately €20 million. Despite this disparity, Aprilia is leading the championship standings, showcasing the competitive nature of the sport.
Ezpeleta acknowledged the challenges of implementing a budget cap, given the diverse financial realities of manufacturers. He has been in discussions with teams about establishing a new commercial framework for the next five years, although a recent proposal to reduce the number of bikes available for testing was rejected during a Grand Prix Commission meeting.
