MotoGP Riders Prepare for Qatar Grand Prix Amid Safety Concerns
During a recent meeting in Sepang, MotoGP riders discussed their concerns about traveling to Qatar for the upcoming Grand Prix, scheduled for next weekend. The championship promoter, MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (MGPSEG), affirmed that the current instability in the region does not warrant canceling the event.
The Qatar Grand Prix was postponed for nearly six months and is now set to take place despite ongoing tensions in the Gulf region due to a conflict involving the US-Israeli alliance and Iran. Many riders have expressed their reservations about the trip, with over three-quarters opposing it, while MGPSEG maintains that the Qatari government's assurances are adequate.
CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta reiterated to the riders that their contracts bind them to their teams, which would face penalties if obligations are not met. Riders have requested written guarantees regarding their safety, but MGPSEG states that such assurances are the responsibility of the Qatari government. A document from Qatar promising emergency responses has been submitted, but riders seek more detailed commitments. Some teams are hesitant about sending personnel, with Yamaha and Honda planning to minimize their staff.
