MotoGP Riders Seek Safety Guarantees Ahead of Qatar Grand Prix
MotoGP riders convened on Wednesday at the Sepang circuit, aiming to secure written assurances that would enable their participation in the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix.
Following a prolonged period of uncertainty and rising tensions, a resolution to the standoff between the majority of the MotoGP grid and the championship promoter is anticipated within the next two days. Carlos Ezpeleta, deputy managing director of MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group, is expected to return from Doha soon, where he attended a conference to evaluate the situation in Qatar.
The race, initially set for mid-April, was postponed to November 8 due to the ongoing conflict between the US-Israel and Iran. While hostilities have lessened, many riders remain hesitant about traveling to Qatar. They are requesting guarantees regarding their safety, including evacuation plans and insurance for potential airspace closures. Although discussions have been constructive, a definitive agreement has yet to be reached, with the main issue being who will provide the requested guarantees. The relationship between the riders and MGPSEG is currently strained, as both sides navigate the complexities of the situation.
