Mount Nittany Medical Center Faces Growth Challenges Amid Labor Dispute
Mount Nittany Medical Center, a key healthcare provider in Centre County, is undergoing major changes as it invests in new facilities and addresses a recent labor dispute. The 260-bed facility is currently constructing a $350 million patient tower and has allocated $90 million for a new outpatient center.
The medical center's growth has been challenged by a strike involving about 1,000 employees, which began on July 27 after contract negotiations failed. The workers, including nurses and technicians, sought wage increases and improved workplace safety. The strike was the first at the facility since 2004, but the hospital remained operational with modified services.
After extensive negotiations, a tentative agreement was reached in September, resulting in a new three-year contract that includes wage increases and additional benefits. Concurrently, Mount Nittany is pursuing the restoration of its Sole Community Hospital designation, which was revoked in April, impacting its Medicare reimbursements significantly. The hospital has filed a lawsuit against the federal government regarding this designation, with a response expected by October 26.
