Munster Rugby Defends Venue Choice for Anthony Foley Tribute
Munster Rugby has responded to criticism regarding its decision to host Saturday's European opener at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, where tributes to Anthony Foley will take place, rather than at Thomond Park.
Foley, a former player and head coach, passed away unexpectedly in October 2016. The match against Racing 92 marks ten years since his death. While tributes are planned for the game, some supporters, including former player Ronan O'Gara, have expressed disappointment over the venue choice.
In a statement, Munster explained that the decision to play at Pairc Ui Chaoimh was made in March, prior to the Champions Cup draw in July. They acknowledged the disappointment of fans but emphasized that logistical arrangements were already in place, making a venue change impractical. The club aims to honor Foley's legacy with special tributes during the match, including commemorative jackets and a moment of applause.
