Nairobi to Host 2029 World Athletics Championships, London Loses Bid
Nairobi, Kenya, has been confirmed as the host city for the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking a historic first for the event in Africa. London, which submitted a bid, was not selected.
The decision was announced by World Athletics president Sebastian Coe, who noted the high quality of the bids received. UK Athletics CEO Jack Buckner expressed disappointment over the outcome, emphasizing the strength of London's proposal and thanking various stakeholders for their support.
This event is significant for Kenya, a nation renowned for its distance runners, and it will return to Germany in 2031, with Munich as the host city. Coe highlighted the importance of bringing the championships to Africa, stating that athletics is deeply ingrained in Kenyan culture.
