NASCAR Addresses 2004 Fine Against Dale Earnhardt Jr.
NASCAR has taken steps to address a controversial fine imposed on Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2004 following his victory at Talladega. During the celebration after the EA Sports 500, Earnhardt used profanity, leading to a $10,000 fine and a deduction of 25 championship points from NASCAR.
In a notable shift, NASCAR now operates a swear jar that collects $5 for each instance of swearing during races. As of 2026, the total contributions to this jar have reached $17,920, including a recent $10,000 donation made as an apology for Earnhardt's past penalty. Additionally, NASCAR contributed another $10,000 to the Dale Jr. Foundation.
In response to the donation, Earnhardt expressed appreciation for the gesture but humorously noted that he still has not received his points back.
