NASCAR Implements Mobile Power Grid for San Diego Race

NASCAR collaborated with ABB to establish a self-sufficient power supply for the Anduril 250 Race the Base weekend held at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego. This initiative was necessary to maintain Air Force readiness and prevent any disruption to military operations.

The race circuit was designed around the base's perimeter, allowing fans to gather safely while ensuring that all racing activities operated independently from the local electrical grid. To achieve this, NASCAR developed a network of microgrids, which included 30 Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) paired with traditional diesel generators, minimizing generator use to just two hours daily.

This innovative approach, which evolved from previous Cup Series events, allowed NASCAR to power all motorsport activities without compromising sustainability goals. The organization aims for net-zero operating emissions by 2035, focusing on renewable energy and reduced carbon emissions while maintaining the integrity of the racing experience.
