NASCAR's New Championship Format Introduces Key Changes

NASCAR has introduced a new version of the Chase for the Championship, which will run for ten weeks. This iteration includes 16 drivers, of whom only two have experience from the previous format used from 2004 to 2013.

A major change is the incorporation of stage racing, established in 2017, which alters how points are awarded. Winning a race now carries a 20-point advantage over second place, emphasizing race-long performance and creating more opportunities for drivers to recover from poor finishes.

Drivers like Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano have noted the differences in strategy and competition compared to past formats. The new system rewards consistent performance over the ten races, with drivers acknowledging that winning multiple races could secure a championship before the final event. This format aims to provide a fairer method for determining the champion, moving away from previous systems that allowed for more variability in outcomes.
