Nationals Place Joey Wiemer on Release Waivers

The Washington Nationals announced on Wednesday that outfielder Joey Wiemer has been placed on unconditional release waivers. If he clears the waivers, he will become a free agent within 48 hours, allowing the team to open a spot on their 40-man roster.

Wiemer started the season strong, achieving four multi-hit games and hitting two home runs in his first five games. However, his performance declined significantly, resulting in a .189/.295/.340 batting line and a 41% strikeout rate over the next 61 plate appearances, which led to his optioning to Triple-A Rochester.

His time in Rochester has not improved, as he recorded a .196/.277/.257 batting line in 42 games, striking out in 31% of his plate appearances. Despite recent roster changes, including the trade of Luis Garcia Jr. and James Wood's injury, the Nationals opted not to recall Wiemer to the major leagues. Wiemer, a former top prospect, has a career batting line of .216/.296/.380 in the majors.
