Nationals Release Trevor Williams After Four Seasons

The Washington Nationals announced the release of veteran pitcher Trevor Williams after he passed through waivers unclaimed. This decision follows his designation for assignment last week and marks the end of his second two-year contract with the team.

Williams, who is 34 years old, had a challenging season due to a UCL injury that required surgery, sidelining him for much of the year. Upon his return shortly before the trade deadline, he performed well in a multi-inning relief role, achieving a 2.65 ERA over 17 innings with a notable strikeout rate of 31%.

Despite these impressive statistics, the Nationals opted to release him, likely to allow him the opportunity to join a contending team as the postseason approaches. Williams' tenure with the Nationals spanned parts of four seasons, during which he recorded a 4.81 ERA across 310 2/3 innings, earning $27 million during his time with the club.
