Nationals Set to Hire David Besky as Pitching Strategist
The Washington Nationals are anticipated to hire David Besky as their pitching strategist, according to reports. Besky recently served as the director of baseball sciences for the Boston Red Sox.
It remains uncertain if Besky will replace anyone on the Nationals' coaching staff, as reports suggest that manager Blake Butera's team is expected to return for the 2027 season. The Nationals did not have a pitching strategist last season, although Sean Doolittle held the position in 2024 and 2025 before becoming the assistant pitching coach.
Besky's responsibilities will include pitch calling and arsenal analysis. He has been with the Red Sox for three seasons, initially joining as a player development coordinator before becoming the director of baseball sciences in 2025. His previous experience includes three years as a data scientist at Driveline Baseball. The Nationals have recently embraced a youth movement in their leadership, with several young hires in key positions.
