Nationals to Retain Coaching Staff for 2027 Season
The Washington Nationals have decided to retain manager Blake Butera and his entire coaching staff for the upcoming 2027 season. This decision follows a significant overhaul last offseason, which included the hiring of Butera and president of baseball operations Paul Toboni.
Under the leadership of Toboni and Butera, the coaching staff has a notably younger demographic, with pitching coach Simon Mathews being just 30 years old. The team achieved a total of 77 wins in 2026, marking their best performance since their World Series victory in 2019. Despite a challenging season, they ended on a positive note, winning 10 of their last 14 games.
While the coaching staff will remain unchanged, the Nationals are expected to make adjustments to their training staff. Five members of the training team will not have their contracts renewed, including the director of medical services and the head strength and conditioning coach. These departures were amicable and not linked to the implementation of new training strategies, as the team plans to enhance its use of technology and biomechanics resources in the offseason.
