Navigating Running Amidst Uncertainty
A runner shares their experience of achieving a significant training milestone just before widespread shutdowns began. Over a weekend, they completed back-to-back runs totaling more than 26 miles and 5,000 feet of elevation gain, feeling strong and well-prepared.
However, as the situation evolved, the runner faced confusion and anxiety about continuing their routine. While experts recommend running alone in nature for health benefits, the trails have become crowded, leading to tense interactions with other runners. Some maintain social distancing, while others disregard safety measures, adding stress to the experience.
In response to these challenges, the runner has made several adjustments to their training regimen. They reduced their weekly runs from five to four, prioritized quality sleep, began morning meditation, and eliminated alcohol from their diet. These changes, while drastic, are seen as necessary adaptations to maintain both physical fitness and mental well-being during uncertain times.
