This early game marks a departure from the league's typical schedule, which usually features only a night doubleheader for Opening Night. The Celtics and Pistons, who finished at the top of the Eastern Conference standings last season, both faced disappointment in the playoffs. The Pistons are currently favored by 2.5 points, pending the signing of All-NBA center Jalen Duren, while the Celtics made a significant offseason trade involving All-NBA forward Jaylen Brown.
The defending champion Knicks will celebrate their title with a ring ceremony before their game against the 76ers, who will be led by LeBron James in his 24th season. The Knicks are favored at +330 to repeat as Eastern Conference champions, with the 76ers close behind at +350. Philadelphia's home opener is scheduled for October 22 against Cleveland, and they will also face the Lakers on Christmas Day.
