NBA Expansion Talks Focus on Las Vegas Venue Challenges

The NBA Board of Governors is currently engaged in discussions regarding the potential expansion of franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle, with a focus on the challenges posed by venue options in Las Vegas.

While Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena is ready for an expansion team, Las Vegas presents uncertainties, as a franchise there could either modify the T-Mobile Arena or require a new venue. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver indicated that the timeline for establishing a team in Las Vegas is longer compared to Seattle, where operational groups have already assessed the arena's suitability.

The league aims to finalize decisions on expansion by the end of the year, with bids expected soon but not final. The board had previously voted to explore expansion options, and teams in both cities are projected to debut in the 2028/29 season, accompanied by an expansion draft in the summer of 2028. Two bidders are known for Seattle, while discussions for Las Vegas are being led by Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont.
