NBA to Launch New League in Europe with Major Investment by 2027
The NBA is set to make a historic investment in European basketball with the launch of a new league in October 2027, as announced by deputy commissioner Mark Tatum during a press meeting.
Tatum confirmed that the league will be merit-based, allowing teams to qualify from other leagues. While he did not provide specific details on the initial team lineup, he emphasized the league's focus on investing in academies, grassroots development, marketing, and arena infrastructure.
Despite EuroLeague owners rejecting an initial merger proposal, the NBA and FIBA remain optimistic about future discussions. Tatum highlighted the potential for financial stability and profitability for clubs, projecting multibillion-dollar distributions over the first decade. The NBA and FIBA's collaboration on this venture was formally announced in March 2025, aiming to reshape the European basketball landscape.
