Neal Lancaster: The PGA Tour Winner Who Made US Open History
Neal Lancaster, a former PGA Tour champion, is known for his unique achievement in the US Open, where he became the first player to score 29 over nine holes. Despite only one PGA Tour victory and limited recognition, Lancaster's career included significant moments.
In 1994, Lancaster won the GTE Byron Nelson Golf Classic after a six-man playoff, marking a highlight in his 530-event career. His US Open debut in 1995 at Shinnecock Hills saw him finish strong, birdieing six of his last eight holes, which secured a tie for fourth place.
In the 1996 US Open at Oakland Hills, Lancaster again shot 29 over nine holes, placing him near the top of the leaderboard at one point. However, he could not maintain his performance and finished tied for 82nd. Lancaster's last appearance on the PGA Tour was in 2019 at the Puerto Rico Open, where he withdrew after the first round.
