Nelson Peltz Offers $1.4 Billion to Acquire Wendy's Amid Struggles
Nelson Peltz, a longtime investor and former chairman of Wendy's, has reportedly proposed a $1.4 billion acquisition of the fast food chain, as indicated by an SEC filing.
This offer comes as Wendy's shares experienced a 15% increase in premarket trading, despite the company's market capitalization being $1.17 billion prior to the announcement. Wendy's has been struggling against competitors like McDonald's and Taco Bell, leading to a potential wave of restaurant closures.
Meritage Hospitality Group, one of Wendy's largest franchisees, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September, which has exacerbated the challenges facing the chain. The new CEO, Bob Wright, who took over in May, is tasked with addressing these issues, including the closure of underperforming locations, as the company has seen a decline in same-store sales for six consecutive quarters.
