Netanyahu's Bloc Intensifies Pressure on Arab Leaders Amid Election Uncertainty
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition increased pressure on Israeli Arab leaders on Thursday, making unproven allegations of foreign funding as the nation faces uncertainty following an inconclusive election.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has called for an investigation into the fraud allegations but warned against stigmatizing the Arab Israeli community, which saw a significant voter turnout. With nearly 93 percent of the votes counted, Netanyahu's bloc holds 53 seats while the opposition led by Gadi Eisenkot has 48, both falling short of the 61 needed for a majority.
The accusations from Netanyahu's camp, which have been rejected by a key Arab party, could complicate the electoral process, especially as tensions with Iran persist. The Raam party leader expressed willingness for an investigation into the claims, asserting no connection to the allegations. Observers noted that these accusations might further alienate Arab lawmakers from the opposition, impacting the potential formation of a government.
