New Footage Challenges Referee's Timeout Claim in Liberty's Overtime Loss
ATLANTA — New video evidence has emerged that contradicts the WNBA's pool report following the Liberty's overtime loss in Game 2, confirming that Breanna Stewart inquired about a reset timeout from referee Kevin Fahy.
The footage, revealed by ESPN's NBA Today, shows Stewart asking Fahy about the timeout while Angel Reese was preparing to shoot free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining in overtime. Stewart was also seen signaling to her bench for a reset timeout, which would have allowed the Liberty to advance the ball and make substitutions.
Fahy appeared to dismiss Stewart's request, indicating with his hand that the Liberty had no timeouts left. The Liberty subsequently inbounded the ball from the opposing baseline, and Stewart's last-second 3-point attempt was unsuccessful, resulting in a 101-98 defeat. Following the game, Stewart expressed frustration over the officials' communication regarding the timeout situation, while coach Chris DeMarco noted that multiple staff members were informed by officials that no reset timeout was available. The Liberty have submitted a query to the league about the incident, which is currently under review.
