New GEFS Model Enhances Surf Forecasting Accuracy

A new forecasting model, known as the Global Ensemble Forecasting System (GEFS), is making waves in surf forecasting. Although it has been operational for over three decades, it has recently been adapted for surfers to enhance wave prediction accuracy.

The GEFS operates by running the same model 31 times with slightly varied starting conditions, providing a range of possible outcomes. This contrasts with the traditional Global Forecast System (GFS), which offers a single prediction based on one set of conditions. The GEFS model's ability to analyze a distribution of outcomes improves the reliability of long-range forecasts, particularly for the second week.

Initially launched in 1992, the GEFS has evolved significantly, particularly with the introduction of GEFSv12 around 2020, which expanded its capabilities and integrated wave modeling directly into the ensemble. Surf-Forecast has recently incorporated the GEFS model for subscribers, allowing users to compare predictions from both GEFS and GFS. This dual approach helps surfers gauge the reliability of forecasts, especially when the two models diverge.
