New NFL Fine Reimbursement System Could Have Saved Players $1.7 Million Annually
The NFL has introduced a new fine reimbursement system aimed at enhancing player safety, which could have saved players approximately $1.7 million annually in recent years. This initiative comes as the league seeks to negotiate a new Collective Bargaining Agreement with the NFL Players Association that may expand the regular season.
Under the new rules, players can recover either half or all of the fines imposed for specific on-field violations. For instance, players with one violation of certain rules, such as hip-drop tackles or hits on defenseless players, can receive a 50 percent refund. In contrast, a single violation of other rules may lead to a full refund.
In the upcoming seasons of 2024 and 2025, it is estimated that around 50 players could receive a 50 percent refund, while approximately 200 players might benefit from a full refund. To qualify for any refund, players must appeal their fines, which means all fines should be contested, regardless of the appeal's merit.
